I Tried the $445 LED Light Mask That Celebrities and Dermatologists Swear By (2025)

Once upon a time, special LED light therapy required a trip to the dermatologist or aesthetician, and that meant shelling out hundreds per session. Luckily, beauty brands have debuted cutting-edge skincare devices that you can use from the comfy confines of your own bathroom. For those curious about the guiding light of at-home LED beauty treatments, consider the Dr. Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro LED therapy mask.

Touted for fighting acne and wrinkles, the Dr. Dennis Gross LED face mask has been proudly championed by skincare professionals, celebrities and real shoppers alike. The futuristic (and slightly menacing) shell houses a serious number of red and blue lights. "These masks use visible light to improve the skin by reducing bacterial count, decreasing inflammation and stimulating collagen production," says Shauna Diggs, M.D., a dermatologist working with Lumenis Laser Aesthetics.

That said, these fancy skincare devices aren't just for show, and their prices put that into perspective — the Dr. Dennis Gross LED mask retails at $455. To help weigh whether the device fits in with your skin needs, we addressed the most pressing questions posed by shoppers, ahead. One GH editor even added the mask to her daily skincare routine and a month later, documented its results on her eczema-prone, dry skin.

What does the Dr. Dennis Gross LED mask do?

Decked out in rose gold hardware, the Dennis Gross LED Mask is a light therapy device designed for the full face and engineered to fight fine lines and wrinkles, inflammation and acne, according to celebrity facialist Sarah Akram. It features a combination of 100 LED lights in red mode and 60 LED lights in blue mode that can work in tandem when switched to the third setting. "This can promote collagen production and can help to treat sun damage," adds Akram.

At a glance:

  • Light types: Blue and red
  • Skin concerns: Acne, redness, inflammation
  • Treatment modes: 3: blue, red and combination
  • Duration: 3 minutes per mode
  • Recommended usage: Once daily

Giving your face more coverage, the combined 160 lightbulbs help to kill bacteria and keep acne at bay while boosting collagen production to smooth lines and wrinkles. How that works? Blue light targets the uppermost layer of the skin, helping destroy acne-causing bacteria, according to Dr. Diggs. Red light penetrates even deeper, working to boost collagen production and help with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen, she adds.

It also comes with a good pedigree — the mask is FDA-approved for at-home use. In short, that means the FDA rigorously reviewed and provided clearance for the device. Masks that aren't FDA-cleared aren't necessarily unsafe. It might mean that the company hasn't taken the official steps to receive the clearance stamp of approval from the FDA.

With consistent use, the typical time frame for results is six to eight weeks. That all depends on consistent use and the severity of your skin concerns. "LED lights can be effective for all skin types but depending on one's specific skin concerns, this device may be a better fit for some than others," says Akram. "I recommend this device for anyone with a specific need for anti-aging and help with fine lines."

How often should you use Dr. Dennis Gross's LED mask?

Dr. Dennis Gross masks are FDA-cleared, professional-grade LED light therapy devices designed to be easily incorporated into your skincare routine with a once-daily 3-minute treatment. "I wouldn't recommend using this device over the suggested timeframe," says Akram. "Overuse will not optimize results. When using this device, the only practice that will benefit the skin is consistency [over] several weeks."

My before-and-after results

On dry, eczema-prone skin

As the cold creeps in, so does my eczema. My sensitive skin manifests as redness, flaky lips and both inflammation and dryness around my eyes. Only Aquaphor and prescription ointments have given me any sort of relief when it comes to my eczema — and even then, it's still hard to tamper. That's why I was the perfect candidate for the Dr. Dennis Gross LED Light Therapy Mask, famed for targeting acne, redness and inflammation.

The Iron Man-like mask looks a bit intimidating at first glance, but it was not at all painstaking to integrate into my daily skincare routine. A small button on the mask's outer clicks on its first mode of blue lights. After three minutes, it automatically shuts off, but you can press it again to cycle to the next treatment — red light, then a combination of blue and red lights — for a total routine just shy of 10 minutes.

Sandwiched between washing my face and applying serums (the LED best penetrates skin without product), I religiously slip on the mask every night. I never miss a day because the brand says the best results show with consistent daily use. The mask comes with adjustable silicone straps that need re-configuring but eventually slide comfortably onto my head. The device is a bit bulky and doesn't quite rest flush against my forehead and chin. While the mask doesn't cover my eyes, I don't enjoy keeping my eyes open during the treatment as the combination of lights is a tad intense for a few seconds.

The combination of red and blue lights is perfectly suited for my dry, sensitive skin concerns. Before I started the treatment (about four weeks ago), I would get minor acne on my forehead and around my nose, as well as redness under my nose. Fast forwarding to now, I've noticed less redness, smaller-sized breakouts and an even complexion. I also think it's helped my skin absorb products better — my skin looks more glassy with my everyday skincare routine. With more time and testing, I'm hoping to see more visible results when it comes to fine lines and firming.

Any travel plans may cause a hiccup in results since you can't travel easily with it — and daily use is needed for best results. As for storage, it comes with a convenient drawstring cloth bag that stores the device and its cord. Per the brand, simply swipe with an alcohol-soaked cotton pad in between uses to keep it in tip-top shape. Plus, I've gone through at least 10 treatments before having to give it a charge. While I don't think the mask is a cure-all, it helps calm flare-ups in conjunction with my regular slathers of fragrance-free lotion.

My sister, who also struggles with eczema on top of perioral dermatitis, has used the mask for six months. Since wearing it, she's reported a difference in as little as one-and-a-half months, flagging more even-toned skin. "Any flare-ups are calmed or completely gone after a few days," she says. "For reference, I'm 29 with no Botox and feel like the mask helps put off the desire for Botox!"

Is the Dr. Dennis Gross mask worth it?

At first, the whole idea that a constellation of lights could grant you miraculous skincare benefits seemed a bit gimmicky to me, especially considering its pricey undertaking. But after just one month of using the Dr. Dennis Gross LED mask, I can say that it's truly made a difference in my skin, for the better.

Overall, I've noticed a more even complexion and less redness induced by eczema. And I appreciated the super low lift it had on my nightly skincare routine. It's important to weigh the cons, however. I found it cumbersome with a bit of an awkward fit, so those with wider face shapes may find it uncomfortable. I also recommend shutting your eyes during the treatment session since the LED can be intense.

Those who struggle with sensitive skin, like acne or eczema, hyperpigmentation or fine lines can find a friend in Dr. Dennis Gross. While it's certainly no thoughtless buy, Dr. Diggs says that these at-home masks can be a great alternative for in-office LED therapy treatments since they are typically more affordable and accessible, and "therefore a better treatment," she says.
